The southwest monsoon that has been drenching Luzon since last week will continue to bring heavy rainfall over the area in the next few days, posing risks of flooding and landslides, according to the state weather bureau on Monday.
Intense rainfall of 100 to 200 millimeters is expected over Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro in the next 24 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 11 a.m. advisory.
PAGASA warned of possible flooding, particularly in urbanized, low-lying areas and those near rivers. It also warned of possible landslides in areas with moderate to high susceptibility.
Until Thursday noon, similar areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall due to the southwest monsoon.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall of about 50 to 100 mm may be experienced in Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union, Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, and Oriental Mindoro.
PAGASA cautioned about the possibility of localized flooding in urbanized, low-lying areas and those near rivers. Landslides are also possible in highly susceptible areas.
PAGASA said the southwest monsoon is likely to weaken in the next few days.
The state weather bureau also said there is no tropical cyclone within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). However, it is monitoring Tropical Storm Peilou (international name) outside PAR, which is expected to move away from the country and will have no direct effect. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
